Hiking in fuerteventura

Discover the views across northern Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura can also be discovered from its mountains. This hiking route to Montaña Escanfraga takes us into the north of the island, through a volcanic landscape and to one of its most prominent peaks.

We will pick you up from your accommodation at the agreed time and head towards the starting point of the route. From the base of Montaña Escanfraga, we will begin our ascent along ancient paths linked to traditional farming and the use of camels for transportation.

A first viewpoint over the north

As we gain elevation, the landscape gradually opens up around us. Halfway up the ascent, we will reach our first viewpoint, where we can pause and take in the northern part of Fuerteventura from an increasingly wider perspective.

From here, we can appreciate the volcanic terrain surrounding the mountain and see how our perception of the landscape changes as we continue climbing.

After this first stop, we will continue towards the upper part of Montaña Escanfraga, crossing the area around its caldera as we gradually leave the lower slopes behind.

Climbing Montaña Escanfraga

At 533 metres above sea level, Montaña Escanfraga is the highest point of this route and, according to the information provided, the highest mountain in Fuerteventura.

As we climb, we can observe how the landscape changes with elevation, moving through an environment shaped by volcanic landforms and marked by traces of traditional land use.

The route offers an opportunity to explore the relationship between geology, landscape and human activity, all of which form part of Fuerteventura’s story.

The summit: a 360° panorama

Reaching the summit offers a completely different perspective.

From the top of Montaña Escanfraga, we will enjoy a 360-degree panorama, allowing us to look out across the landscape in every direction and gain a broad view of northern Fuerteventura.

After gradually gaining elevation from the base, reaching the summit allows us to see the landscape on a different scale and recognise from above some of the features we have encountered along the way.

Return with the essence of Fuerteventura

After reaching the summit of Montaña Escanfraga and taking in the landscape from its 533-metre elevation, we will begin our descent, enjoying a different perspective of the surroundings we have explored.

We will descend the mountain, leaving the volcanic landscape behind as we reconnect with the ancient paths and traces of traditional activities that form part of this territory.

We will finish the route having experienced Fuerteventura from a different perspective: walking through its mountains, understanding its landscape and getting closer to the history of the people who have lived here.
